Good afternoon Vandercook Lake families, Townsend Elementary School was placed into a hard lockdown today at about 11:50am. This was due to an earlier off campus situation that made its way to the Townsend Campus. Sheriff's Deputies were on the scene and placed a person into custody less than a minute after his arrival to the school. There were no weapons found on the person or in the person's vehicle. The "hard lockdown" lasted a little less than five minutes and students were dismissed shortly thereafter. At no time were students in any type of danger, yet some were reportedly shaken during and after the lockdown. While we never want situations like this to ever happen, the administration and staff followed the protocols they have been trained to follow and the students did everything they've been taught in the drills that they've practiced this year. This is definitely NOT the way we wanted to end the school year, but please have a safe and happy summer.

Jackson County ISD issued the following statement after voters overwhelming approved the countywide Special Education Millage Renewal Proposal: “We want to thank the greater Jackson County community for renewing the special education millage proposal, which will allow our local districts to continue providing a high quality education to all Jackson County students. While this millage will reimburse schools for their mandated special education costs, all students will benefit because schools won’t have to move resources from other programs to cover these costs. Our core mission is working in partnership with local schools and the community, and we are committed to the success of all students. The passage of this renewal affirms our community’s strong support of our local districts and the generous hearts of voters who continue to support our students with special needs. Thank you so much, it is our honor to serve!” ~ Kevin Oxley, Jackson County ISD Superintendent
